Inner Circle of Russian Federation, 1992

Topic Summary

Topic: Economic Crisis

This committee simulates the dynamics of the Russian government following the collapse of the Soviet Union. As delegates, you will be representing key figures in the Russian transition, from the radical free-market reformers to Communist holdouts. The focus of the committee will primarily be in answering economic questions. Some of the key issues to be debated are the liberalization of prices, the privatization of companies, and methods for economic stabilization.

However, the economics of the transition cannot be separated from the political and philosophical debates at the time, and thus we will also investigate other exciting aspects of the period. No prior knowledge of economics or Russian history is required.

Director’s Letter

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the Inner Circle of Russian Federation, 1992! My name is Paul Apostolicas, and I can’t wait to meet and work with you all as the Committee’s 2020 HMUN director.

I'm a sophomore in Cabot house and I love international relations — I'm involved in the Harvard International Review, Model Security Council, and Harvard Model UN. I also enjoy chess, tennis, economics, finance, and good food (especially sushi)! I'm really excited for committee and look forward to meeting all of you.

I participated in HMUN as a high schooler, and I loved it so much that I'm here directing a committee. As a high school delegate, I found that the quality of debate at HMUN is unrivaled. More importantly, the dais was so kind and was meaningfully invested in our growth as delegates. In the end, HMUN is an opportunity to learn a great deal about the issues that shape our world, while making new friendships and deepening old ones.

The dais wants to help you! Ask for feedback as much as you can because that is one way in which you can grow as a delegate. Most importantly, however, focus on enjoying your committee and learning as much as you can — I've found that the people that invest themselves most deeply in the topic are the ones that leave the conference most fulfilled.
