Lord of the Rings Elronds Council

Topic Summary

As the Shadow lengthens across Middle-earth and the One Ring resurfaces after long centuries lost, the free peoples find themselves at a perilous crossroads. With Sauron's power rising in Mordor, Saruman's betrayal in Isengard, and ancient alliances strained by suspicion and grief, this committee will explore the strategic, moral, and existential challenges facing the representatives gathered in Rivendell. Delegates—elves, dwarves, men, wizards, and hobbits alike—will grapple with decisions around the fate of the Ring, the defense of their realms, and the fragile unity required to confront a darkness that threatens to consume all.

Through a crisis-driven lens, the committee will simulate the deliberations of Elrond's Council as it navigates pressure from rival kingdoms, encroaching enemies, and the seductive pull of the Ring itself. From the defense of Gondor and Rohan to the loyalties of Lothlórien, the restlessness of the Dwarven holds, and the whispered counsel of Saruman, delegates will be challenged to balance the ambitions of their peoples with the survival of Middle-earth—making critical decisions that will determine whether the Age of Men dawns in freedom or in shadow.

Dear Delegates,

It is my joy to welcome you to the Lord of the Rings Crisis Committee for the 2027 Session of Harvard Model United Nations! I am honored to serve as your Director and look forward to hearing your wonderful ideas and seeing your collaborative skills throughout our time together.

My name is Anthony Wang and I am from Seattle, Washington! I am a sophomore at Harvard College, concentrating in Applied Math and Philosophy. I was involved in debate during high school but had always wanted to try out Model UN– my only obstacle was that my high school did not offer it. After coming to Harvard, I joined the Intercollegiate Model UN team and love the team! In particular, I love the community that this event brings together, the public speaking skills I’ve learned as a part of giving speeches on the fly, and think it has been a defining part of my college experience.

Aside from Model UN, I am involved in consulting and the Independent, a creative-based paper at Harvard. I’m exceptionally outdoorsy (it’s part of coming from Seattle), and am always down for a hike or spontaneous nature expedition. I’m also tapped into the music scene on campus– spanning the various music-related extracurricular options on campus– and consider it an integral part of my life. This past summer, I interned for a startup in NYC that organizes raves and yoga sessions for young adults.

From the early stages of your research to appearing before committee, I am here for you every step of the way! Please let me know if you have any questions, and I am so excited to see you soon!

Sincerely,

Anthony
