Space Race
Topic Summary
Humankind has always been fascinated by what is beyond earth, either defining it by folklore, religion, or science. The latter found its footing in the mid 20th-century, marking a turn for international investment in space exploration. The Space Race, the decades-long competition between the United States and Soviet Union, was defined by immense increases in spending, new scientific discoveries, and an intertwining of science and politics. The period included everything from Communist scandal to dogs being flown into space. In an effort to race to the moon, nothing was seemingly off limits.
In our committee, it will be up to the scientists, astronauts, and government officials of both the US and USSR to define the new era of space exploration and travel. In a universe of uncharted territory, the only current goal is getting to the moon. But, when technological, ideological, and governmental policies are at odds, it’s easy to get blown off course. In a time of deep pressure to remain on top, space exploration does not operate in a vacuum. Instead, delegates must balance their various interests to protect not just their country's dominance through space travel, but ultimately protect all of humankind.
Dear Delegates,
I’m honored to welcome you all to Harvard Model United Nations 2027! Over my limited time in HMUN, I have already been able to see the immense amount of growth fostered through the power of public speaking. The unique world of MUN provides an informative opportunity to not just learn about international relations, history, or debate, but most importantly, find your own voice in the process. HMUN in particular fosters growth through connection with people from across the world, and there will be plenty of opportunities to connect with peers and make new friends! In the process of taking risks, both educationally through debate and socially through forming bonds with peers, the entire process will be a transformational experience for you all. I am incredibly privileged to play a role in your growth throughout our weekend together!
I am a sophomore at Harvard from Revere, Massachusetts, just 20 minutes off our campus! Despite being home to America’s first public beach, I still cannot swim…hopefully I will learn soon! Along with my love of Boston, I also appreciate taking care of my plants, playing the guitar, thrifting at local spots, and crocheting in my (little) free time.
When I’m not in class or finding a hobby to keep busy with, I’m probably spending time in one of my many extracurriculars! I’ve found great joy staffing HMUN and HNMUN, competing on the college MUN circuit, volunteering around Cambridge, and fighting for immigrant justice. I was a legal intern this past summer in San Francisco, and have learned about the incredible opportunity for growth through the lens of public service. Along with other extracurriculars, I hope to study Social Studies and Ethnicity, Migration, Rights, both passions motivated by my care for public service, debate, and Model UN!
I have known the unique world of Model UN ever since my first year in high school. Before joining, I knew very little about the world of international relations. But still, I saw my family and city’s immigrant roots as motivation to care more about the world around me. With the help of my school’s team, I was able to find myself learning more about my passions for immigrant advocacy and international human rights law. Model UN has afforded me more opportunities than simply practicing public speaking and debate skills, but also has given me confidence and a better understanding of my place in contributing to society. I hope you all share the same joys, as well as forge your own journey throughout HMUN!
I look forward to learning with you all. See you at the conference!
