Topic Summary
In UNICEF, delegates will examine a global response to one of the world’s most pressing issues: childhood hunger and malnutrition. As global food systems continue to be strained, it has become essential to ensure that every child has access to safe and nutritious food in alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the October session, delegates will examine the history of childhood hunger and malnutrition and evaluate past actions of UNICEF in this problem. In the December session, delegates will examine the challenges of food waste, food recovery, and farmland restoration in connection with childhood hunger. Delegates will work to establish comprehensive and sustainable solutions to this global food crisis.
Maurits is a sophomore studying Government with a secondary in Education at Harvard. Born in the Netherlands to Cuban parents, he grew up in Miami. At Harvard, Maurits is a Director for HMUN Boston and HMUN Brazil and the USG of Business for HNMUN 2027. He previously served as USG of Administration for the inaugural HMUN Canada and will return this year as its Director-General. He also competes on and helps run Harvard’s Intercollegiate MUN team, which is ranked 5th in North America.
Beyond MUN, Maurits sits on the Board of Directors of the Harvard IRC, is Director of Outreach at the Harvard Public Opinion Project, and is a Case Team Lead for Harvard Consulting on Business and the Environment. He is also the founder of Virtutem Populo, a student-led civic education nonprofit, and serves on the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Board of Directors. At HMUN Online, Maurits will direct UNICEF, and he is excited to meet delegates from around the world and hear their ideas for protecting children’s rights.
