International Cricket Council

Topic Summary

In recent years, cricket has undergone a seismic shift as franchise leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL), Pakistan Super League (PSL) and others have captured global attention, redefining the sport's financial landscape. While these tournaments have fueled unprecedented growth and visibility, they have also raised serious concerns about the marginalization of traditional formats such as One Day Internationals and Test matches. This committee will explore the complex tension between commercial success and preserving the heritage, integrity, and long-form beauty of the game. Delegates will be tasked with crafting sustainable solutions that honor cricket's enduring legacy while navigating the realities of modern sports economics.

Prior knowledge of cricket will not be useful by any means - watching the game provides little context to the current level of commercialization. This committee will be accessible to everyone, regardless of whether you have ever watched a minute of cricket or not! As long as you like sports, you will have a LOT of fun!

background guide

Hi everyone!

My name is Abdullah Shahid Sial, and I am from Lahore, Pakistan. I am a junior at the College. I am pursuing a double concentration in Economics and Applied Mathematics with a focus in Physics. I am as excited as one can be to serve as the Director for HMUN’s International Cricket Council!

Back in high school, I used to compete in the Pakistani circuit but unlike many of my peers here at Harvard, I do not compete in Model UN conferences at college. After serving as the Director of FIFA in HMUN 2025, I will direct two committees in HMUN and HNMUN in 2026. Apart from this, I am the Co-President of the Harvard Undergraduate Association and an organizer for Harvard Pakistan Trek. I also captain Harvard’s cricket team! (I can talk about cricket all day :)

I am looking forward to seeing everyone soon! In the meantime, if you have any questions, feel free to direct them towards me.

Regards,

Abdullah Shahid Sial
